#fatfriday review / Valentine’s Fairy Cakes @ Fiona Cairns
My first favourite proper naughty yummy treat was a Fiona Cairns fairy cake, one that I discovered many, many years ago. In my first year at university, I remember frequently trying to find an excuse to poodle along to Harrods food hall to pick up a box and eating them all in one go (now as an old lady I could not possibly handle all this sugar in one sitting). I’ve bought them countlessly as gifts for friends and love to have a box ready and waiting in the cupboard whenever we have anyone round. I just think they are the most wonderful little things.
Naughty yummy treat: Valentine’s Fairy Cakes.
Price: £2 for two, normally they come in a pack of 6 for £5.
Portion size: Perfect.
Sickliness: Sweet and wonderful.
Notes: First off, it’s worth noting that a fairy cake is very different to a cupcake. For those of you not in the know, a fairy cake is supposed to be slightly smaller than a cupcake, with glace icing rather than the cupcakes buttercream. Fairy cakes are a little more British, whereas cupcakes are a tad more American. Both are terribly enjoyable.
What is so marvellous about Fiona Cairns’ fairy cakes is that they are always consistently deliciously soft and light, super moist, with a good amount of icing. The cake part is never dry, and the icing only hardens ever so slightly on top but is delightfully soft inside once bitten into. There’s nothing much worse than biting into a fairy cake and the icing is so rock hard you may as well have eaten a sugar cube. What I like about buying a box of these is that I know they are not going to let me down, they don’t go off very quickly but yet they taste as they have been freshly made. Sometimes they come with sweeties on top (these jelly bean hearts were lovely) and they also mix it up with vanilla sponge *and* chocolate sponge, it is a very good day when that happens.
