#fatfriday review / Doughnuts @ Crosstown in Selfridges
I was recently forwarded an old article from The Guardian about how doughnuts are having their turn at being gourmet. You see, I’m completely behind this movement of giving any naughty yummy treat a makeover and transforming them into a luxurious acceptable goody, and I couldn’t be happier that doughnuts are having their moment. The special doughnuts that were given a special mention in the article were from Crosstown, and seeing as it is National Doughnut Week, I got myself over to Selfridges to pick out a few of these little beasts.
Naughty yummy treat: British Raspberry Jam Doughnut; Sea Salt Caramel and Banana Cream Doughnut; Belgian Chocolate Truffle Doughnut; Cinnamon Scroll Glazed Doughnut.
Price: £3.00; £3.50; £3.50; £3.00.
Portion size: Standard doughnut size.
Sickliness: Food coma worthy (probably shouldn't eat 4 in a go).
Moistness: Overall - good.
Notes: We had quite a wonderful 10 minutes gobbling these up (yes, 'we' - I had to get help as even by my standards I think it is just a step too far to eat all 4 by myself). The Raspberry is my favourite, it's filled to the brim with lots of lovely handmade proper jam and is super scrummy. Hmm nom nom. The Sea Salt Caramel is flavourful with all the oozing banana cream, although oddly it just didn’t have that moist, melt in your mouth dough that the Raspberry doughnut had. The Belgian Chocolate is rich and decadent, definitely the fanciest out of the four. It is like a full on glorious dessert in a doughnut and went down very well. And finally, the Cinnamon Scroll is less like a doughnut and very much like a Cinnabon, just a slightly less sickly version full of cinnamon wonder and lathered with sugary frosting. Overall, not only do they look super tempting, they are most tasty, packed with lots of filling and flavour. Even just one would suffice. All hail the gourmet doughnut!
